The Helium Abundance Problem and Non-minimally Coupled Quintessence

چکیده
Recently, it has been discovered that the expansion of the Universe is accelerating. This requires the existence of a dark energy component in the Universe with an equation of state p = wρ, w < 0. One example of such a component is a cosmological constant. However, it is difficult to understand in the present framework of particle physics why it is so small. A fine tuning of 10 is required if the cosmological constant arises from Planck scale physics. Quintessence models were suggested as an alternative to cosmological constant. In quintessence models, a scalar field provides the dark energy which drives the accelerated expansion of the Universe. The evolution of the scalar field is such that its equation of state mimics the dominant component of the Universe, thus explains why it is so small at present time. In Non-minimally Coupled (NMC) quintessence models the scalar field couples to the gravitational constant. The action of NMC can be written as

How to Get Less Helium and More Neutrinos from Bbn
The predicted primordial He abundance Y increases with the expansion rate of the Universe during the big bang nucleosynthesis(BBN). This has been used to put limits on the number of neutrinos, quintessence models, and other new physics. At present, there are still large systematic errors in measurement of the primordial helium abundance. Oliver and Steigman obtained Y = 0.234 ± 0.003(stat.), wh...

A light scalar field, minimally or not-minimally coupled to the metric field, is a well-defined candidate for the dark energy, overcoming the coincidence problem intrinsic to the cosmological constant and avoiding the difficulties of parameterizations. We present a general description of the weak gravitational lensing valid for every metric theory of gravity, including vector and tensor perturb...

متن کاملA Quintessence Scalar Field in Brans–Dicke Theory
It is shown that a minimally coupled scalar field in Brans–Dicke theory yields a non–decelerated expansion for the present universe for open, flat and closed Friedmann-Robertson-Walker models.

We revise the stability of the tracking solutions and briefly review the potentials of quintessence models. We discuss the evolution of linear perturbations for V (φ) = V0 exp(λφ2/2) potential in which the scalar field is non-minimally coupled to cold dark matter. We consider the effects of this coupling on both cosmic microwave background temperature anisotropies and matter perturbations. We f...
